On The Farm

A Summer Update from Pimhill Farm

Here on the Farm, the season has been particularly kind to us – and to our crops. We’re thrilled to share that the oats are looking especially beaufiful this year.

After a cool, wet Spring, that helped the young plants to establish, we’ve had a run of sunshine and warmth, which has brought the oats on – so much so, that the harvest is now set to begin two weeks earlier than expected! Bringing the crop in at its’ peak will ensure great quality – full of natural flavour, nutrition and the character that comes from traditional organic farming.

We are often asked about Glyphosates – these are the residues from herbicide applications that can be found on food products. Under conventional farming methods, frequently an application of Glyphosate is made about 2 weeks before harvesting to help with the maturing and the drying of the crop. This herbicide is applied because, by killing the plant, the final ripening and drying of the grain happens quicker – giving the conventional farmer more control over the harvesting of the crop.

At Pimhill Farm, we have to rely on Mother Nature to bring the crop to maturity, and coupled with a dollop of good weather to ensure the crop comes in dry enough to store safely.

With an early harvest on the horizon, attention is now firmly focused on ensuring everything, including the harvesting equipment, is prepared and runs smoothly.

This is always one of the most exciting times of the year on the Farm and we’re always very grateful to have your support as part of the Pimhill community.

We’ll keep you updated!
